Visit endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat

Join Kindred Safaris on an adventure across the rainforests and savannah of Rwanda. Experience one of Africa’s underexplored gems by following in the footsteps of primatologist Dian Fossey who studied the gorillas of the Volcanoes National Park region.

Guides will lead you up the gentle slopes of the volcanoes in search for families of gorilla and a variety of other primates. Explore Nyungwe National Park, one of Africa’s oldest rainforests, and home to numerous species of primates, including approximately 500 chimpanzees in two main troops.

Finally, visit Akagera National Park in eastern Rwanda and home to one of Africa’s highest densities of hippos and numerous predators ranging the savannas and marshes of this region.

Sample Gorilla Trek Itinerary

Arrival Day

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, we will drive to Kigali genocide memorial site and then proceed to Volcanoes National Park to check in at our lodge where we will have dinner and stay the night.
Day 1

After an early morning breakfast, drive to the park headquarters for registration and briefing about gorilla trekking guidelines. Today we start our adventure in search of the endangered mountain gorilla in their natural habitat.
Lunch, Dinner and overnight stay at either Mountain Gorilla View Lodge or Virunga Lodge.
Day 2

After an early morning breakfast we drive to the park headquarters for registration and briefing about the history of Dian Fossey, the famous primatologist. We then drive towards the mountain to visit her grave and drive back to your lodge for lunch.
Next we set off for the Karongi District in the Southern Province. Dinner and overnight stay will be at the Comoran Lodge.
Day 3

After breakfast, we will take a boat ride to explore different islands in Lake Kivu such as Napoleon and Amahoro and meet the local people who live on the islands.
We will have lunch in the region and then depart for Nyungwe National Park where we will check in at either Nyungwe Top View Hotel or One&Only Nyungwe House.
Day 4

Wake up early morning and drive to the park to catch up with the resident chimpanzees as they wake up in their natural habitat. We head back to the hotel for lunch this afternoon for leisure time and an optional canopy walk experience.
We will overnight again at either Nyungwe Top view Hotel or One&Only Nyungwe House.
Days 5-6

After breakfast, we depart to Kigali, with stop offs at the National Museum of Rwanda and King’s Palace at Nyanza (The Royal Palace). Our overnight stay and dinner will be at either the Mille Colline Hotel or the Kigali Serena Hotel.
The next day, depending on your flight departure, we will visit Nyamata and Ntarama Memorial churches, have coffee and later transfer to the airport for your flight back home.
